Marvel’s Spider-man 2 Review: Amazing Becomes Ultimate In Standout Superhero Sequel

Miles, a student at Brooklyn Visions Academy, sees all of his friends solidifying their plans for college—but he is feeling left out. He’s been so focused on other things; he hasn’t had time to think about the future. There are plenty of directions he could go but trying to pick the ‘right’ one is overwhelming and paralyzing. In the latest adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, teenager Miles Morales is adjusting to his new home while following in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Parker, as a new Spider-Man.

Nixxes is a studio with a great track record for porting games such as this one, with the company ensuring that Nvidia DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3.1, along with Intel XeSS upscaling, are included from day one. This means that you should have ready access to upscaling options to get the best balance of performance and image quality for your needs, as long as your PC has the power to match the presets you use. If you own a top-spec PC, you might just be able to match the Spider-Man 2 ultimate ray tracing specs. This will give you 4K at 60fps on average, with very high graphics settings enabled, along with ray tracing settings set to ultimate. Meanwhile, the 12-core Intel Core i K or AMD Ryzen X (or better) will be sufficient for the gaming CPU, with the RAM requirement still set at 16GB.

Aunt May’s Grave can be found in the graveyard in the north-west corner of the map (north-west corner of Harlem district). It’s in the northern half of the graveyard on a grassy patch under some trees, away from the asphalted path. The Deluxe version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PC will feature all Standard Edition content and additional stuff. They’ve gotten bored with chasing game in other parts of the world, but NYC’s heroes and villains represent a new challenge. The woman at the bar is Delilah, a character shown in the art book for 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse movie.

In keeping with Insomniac’s track record, the music behind it all is stellar, with Miles’ and Peter’s respective signature tunes playing depending on who you’re controlling. A highlight, though, is the theme that follows in Kraven’s footsteps, which bears more than a passing resemblance to Howard Shore’s Uruk-hai war march from The Lord of the Rings score. It soundtracks a world that looks stunning, even when played in performance mode at a stable 60fps as I did for most of my playthrough.

We introduced all-new abilities and traversal options such as Symbiote Surge and Web Wings, and we’ve also expanded Marvel’s New York with new boroughs and side missions to explore. We’re also delighted to announce that the Fly N’ Fresh Suit Pack, our charity collab with non-profit Gameheads, will be available for PS5 players in October and PC on launch at no additional cost. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent.

The game requires at least a GTX 1650 or Radeon RX 5500 XT to run properly at minimum settings. For a smoother and more visually immersive experience, an RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 5700 is recommended. Instead, Spider-Man 2 plumps for a pretty confused take on the now venerable black suit/Venom’s origin storyline. It’s mashed together with an uncharacteristically large-scale invasion of New York by Kraven the Hunter (seeking worthy super-powered prey) and a tangle of other subplots and returning villains. The plot points are outlandish, the themes muddy, and Miles doesn’t really have enough to do. None of that’s necessarily a dealbreaker, though—the real problem is the characters.

The next few missions of the game are quite uneventful from a larger standpoint, as Peter Parker loses his professor job and returns to photography. These segments show off basic game mechanics like gadgets and suit customization, as the story takes a break before the excitement picks up later in the first act. By the middle of the first act, players will be reunited with Peter Parker’s best friend, Harry Osborn, the son of Norman Osborn, an iconic Spider-Man character who later becomes the Green Goblin.

A series of open-world action adventure games about one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes. Insomniac Games studio, which also has in its portfolio such titles as Ratchet & Clank or the first three installments of the series Spyro the Dragon. Movement is handled very similarly to the previous games in the series. Using their web shooters, the protagonists can swing between and above buildings while performing aerial acrobatics. Though the movement system is built upon the foundations from the previous installments, there are some new features as well. One of them is the ability to glide – after launching themselves into the air, Peter and Miles can cover long distances without needing to keep using their webs.

The Saving Lives Suit is an original design by Insomniac, and is a new suit for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The Anti-Ock Suit is an original design by Insomniac, and is a returning suit from Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018). The Kumo suit is an original design by artist Peach Momokko, and is a new suit for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The Scarlet III Suit is an original design by Insomniac, and is a new suit for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Previously, players had access to 28 suits at launch and 47 thereafter, pending updates and DLC. Now, you’ll have access to 78 suits with unique costumes for both Peter and Miles. You have symbiote suits alongside adaptations from other franchises. A bird’s-eye assessment reveals Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) to have a more story-focused gameplay narrative compared to the sequel. It incorporates unexpected twists and turns that take you by surprise and really invest your attention and emotion in the narrative. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023) is more action-focused, so much so that the cutscenes can feel like a drag.

New factions and units, such as flamethrower-wielding cultists that keep you at a distance, flying drones, and hunters who deploy laser grids above your head to limit aerial attacks keep you on your sticky toes. Certain enemies are weak to different types of abilities, such as electric or symbiote attacks, which also adds an enjoyable extra wrinkle to fights. It’s by no means revolutionary stuff, but a welcome added level of complexity that makes you consider which powers – or even which Spider-Man – are best for a given job. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is due to release on January 30 for PC, but fans are growing increasingly concerned as the critically acclaimed sequel is still not available to pre-order and has no confirmed system requirements. Developer Insomniac Games confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be the latest entry in the series to be making its way to PC all the way back in October 2024, but has remained oddly quiet on the topic ever since.

While not the most visually impressive experience, it ensures that players with older hardware can still enjoy the story. The majority of the side activities wind up feeling both mechanically and narratively pointless. An electric bike race feels silly enough in a Spider-Man game, but when the stakes are just “I need someone to try out my electric bike”, it’s hard not to think Miles and Peter have more pressing stuff to be getting on with. Far too much of what you’re doing feels like padding from the early days of open world games—there’s more inspiration here from Crackdown than there is from GTA V. Of course, if you’re going to be catching your ray-traced, 4K reflection (if you opt for the 30fps fidelity mode) in that glass so often, you’ll want to look your best. Fear not, because there are dozens and dozens of suits to unlock, with myriad colorful skins to pick from on each of them.
